Eligibility Guide

Who Qualifies for Non-Emergency Medical Transportation?

Medical-necessity criteria for non-emergency medical transportation in New Jersey. Whether you're applying for yourself or a loved one, we'll work with you closely to determine eligibility.

What It Is

What Is Non-Emergency Medical Transportation?

Non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) provides safe, comfortable transport for patients whose medical condition makes traveling by standard transport — taxi, rideshare, family vehicle — unsafe or impractical.

It's not for emergencies (call 911 for those). It's for the regular, ongoing trips that medical care requires.

Qualifying Conditions

Qualifying Medical Conditions

Patients typically qualify if they are or have:

  • Dementia, Alzheimer's, or altered level of consciousness (LOC)
  • Confined to a bed or in a wheelchair
  • In constant moderate to severe pain
  • A danger to self or others
  • Require IV medications or fluids
  • Require special handling during transport
  • Dependent on third-party oxygen assistance
  • Unable to sit in a chair for the duration of transport

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Medicaid cover all my medical trips?
Medicaid covers non-emergency medical transport to covered medical appointments. It doesn't cover personal trips. Call us with your appointment details and we'll confirm coverage.

Call us at (551) 326-9573. We'll walk through your situation and verify coverage with your insurance or Medicaid plan in minutes. No obligation.
